Your first step should be notifying the post office so any mail from your old place will be sent to your new one for a certain period of time. You can fill the form out online at least a week before your moving day so there are no gaps of missed mail.
Especially if you are moving to or out of California, you’ll need to let the DMV know that you’ve left and taken your car with you. You are required to update your address with your local DMV. In California, you only have 10 days to notify the DMV of your change of address. You’ll need to get a new driver’s license and update your vehicle’s registration as well. Check with your local DMV to make sure you have all of your bases covered.
Do you receive social security benefits? If so, you’ll need to let them know where you’re moving to either online or by calling (800) 772-1213.
You’ll want to do this as soon as you know your new address and your moving date. When transferring your electric, you’ll want to schedule a shut off at your current place to happen at the end of your last moving day and to start the morning of your move in. This way you can move with the lights on.
One of the most frustrating feelings is moving to a new home without internet setup yet. Just like you would with your electric company, you should call your utility providers to keep them updated about your new address as soon as possible. This includes your cell phone company as well so they can send the bill to the right place.
Make sure to let your home or renter’s insurance company know where they need to transfer the new policy. Certain companies need to see paperwork and proof of your move, so many sure you get this taken care of ahead of time.
You’ll want easy access to your funds on moving day and you’ll also need to update your online banking, retirement, and other investment accounts.
Once you change your address with your bank, don’t forget to update your billing address for stores, services, or recurring payments that happen through that account. Make a list of the online stores that you shop at most often and take the time to update your address. It’s easy to overlook the shipping details when placing orders, so you’ll want to save yourself the time and headache by switching your address now.
Even if you already have direct deposit setup, you’ll want to let your employer know that you’ve changed your address so your tax forms, pay stubs, and any other paperwork goes to the right place.
Last but not least, don’t forget to inform all of your loved ones about your new home. You can send out a moving announcement, or a simple mass email with your new information.
