5 Tips for a Successful Moving Sale

Moving to a new place is the perfect opportunity to get rid of the things you don’t need anymore. Not only does this make the packing and unpacking process easier, but you could make extra money in the process. But having a successful moving sale takes a little bit more work than just putting your things on the lawn and hanging up a sign.

Here are 5 tps for making a successful moving sale- not just any sale but one that will be successful and fun.

1.) Do it on a Saturday or Sunday

Other than holidays, weekends are usually the best time to host a successful moving sale. If possible, try to plan it around a time you know there will be good weather. When you decide to announce the date, include a wide range of time, such as 9am to 4pm and expect people to pop by at any time. Be prepared for people to show up early as well.

2.) Get the Word Out

Promoting your garage sale is essential to making it successful. You can do things like post signs in various parts of the neighborhood, but it’s not necessarily the most effective. Consider promoting your garage sale on social media and printing off flyers for local businesses to post in their windows. Be sure to include these details so people know what to expect:

  • Date, time, and location
  • A description of popular items like furniture, appliances, and electronics
  • Phone number or email for directions

3.) Sort Your Items Like a Department Store

Add some appeal to your moving sale by arranging your items as if they were displayed in a department store. You can do this by grouping teach item by type, labeling them similarly, and clearly pricing everything. The last thing you want is for customers to dig through disorganized piles of clutter to find something they want to buy. You can make the organization process easier by using tables to arrange things and sort out similar sized items together. Make sure to display your items nicely. This means properly hanging clothes so it makes the browsing process smooth and fun.

4.) Have Shopping Bags/Baskets

One of the most overlooked parts of having a moving sale are the containers that the customers will carry their items in. Start saving your shopping bags so customers can take their purchases with them. Consider having tissue or newspaper on hand to wrap more fragile items like glass or china.

5.) Master the details

Having a good garage sale means covering all your bases. Here are some extra details you don’t want to overlook:

  • Have an extension cord so people can test electrical items to makes sure they work
  • Set up a mirror for people trying on clothes and accessories
  • Consider having batteries for small appliances and toys
  • Have a calculator and a register ready for easy checkouts
  • Have pens and paper on hand just in case
  • Consider filling a box with FREE items to create more interest
  • Have fun!
